![]() The same people who are overjoyed to have a live action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender even though it's guaranteed to be a terrifying "realistic" recreation of the delightful cartoony original. The same people that went to go see Aladdin, even though it was a terrifying "realistic" recreation of the delightful cartoony original. The same people that went to go see Beauty and the Beast even though it was a terrifying "realistic" recreation of a delightful cartoony original. The people that believe "realistic" is better than "cartoony" watched the original because it was the only option, but finally they are being provided a proper, not cartoony version of the exact same thing that already exists. It’s too serious and doesn’t have that silly, fun sort of vibe for many parts that were supposed to be. All-in-all it isn’t what the first lion king is. It also has very abrupt changes that don’t segway very well. ![]() There is no build-up or suspense at any point. The emotional scenes and lessons throughout are rushed through, as if, just to get them out of the way. They don’t really focus on what really matters. The visuals are stunning but I think it’s missing a lot of emotion and depth of character. It’s probably worth seeing if you want to. I suspect they were just too far into it to course correct and just did the best they could with the concept they had tied themselves to. ![]() But they also couldn't just tone down the comedy and songs to make the story fit with realistic looking animals, because then it wouldn't be Lion King. It would break the realism and look wrong. But I'm sure once they got far enough along they couldn't push the realism to make the animals emote and act the way the cartoonish ones did. Everyone saw these hyper real animated creatures, a great cast, a solid director, a film with great music and even a broadway rendition to draw from. So in the minds of executives, and to some creatives as well I'm sure, it was a no brainer to make Lion King. Beauty and the Beast in particular was very similar to the original and made a truck load of money. Favreau did a great job with Jungle Book. My guess is that it's something that sounded great on paper. ![]()
